Aguayos is an interactive visualization that shows migration between Latin American and Caribbean countries with charts inspired by traditional Andean weavings made by the Aymara people. The project won the Community Vote of the Information is Beautiful Awards 2024.

About the Aguayos
The UN Migrant Stock 2020 includes the countries of origin and destination and number of people who migrated during that year. Each chart or aguayo represents a destination country in the dataset.

Process
The visual exploration for this piece started with Processing. I tried different ways of visualizing the data without a particular form in mind.
After noticing the patterns that the data formed, I started my visual research on the aguayos, a centuries-old form of storytelling created by the Aymara people in the Peruvian and Chilean Andes.
Visual Encodings
After several round of feedback, I settled on a design. One aguayo represents a single country. Each column of cells inside an aguayo represents an origin country. The longer the figure, the more countries of origins were found.
The height of each column represents the magnitude of the number of people who migrated from that country of origin to the country of destination being visualized.
Color Palette
The background of each chart shows destination country's subregion. The color palette for each column shows that origin country's subregion.
The more diverse the countries of origin are, the longer the aguayo is and the more colorful it results.
Collages
Three collages were created to illustrate the introduction to the project. The combination of digital and analog-looking visuals is meant to remind the audience of the human realities behind the data.

The project was chosen as the Winner of the Community Vote in the Information is Beautiful Awards 2024.
